Diabetic retinopathy is a complication of diabetes that affects the retina, the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye. Over time, high blood sugar levels can damage the blood vessels in the retina, causing them to leak fluid or bleed, which can distort vision. In advanced stages, new, abnormal blood vessels may grow on the surface of the retina, further threatening vision.
