Sterol synthesis is a highly complex and integrated pathway in mammals. In the present review, we briefly summarize the main steps of this pathway, especially concerning its main rate-limiting enzymes, HMG-CoA reductase (HMGCR) and squalene epoxidase (SQLE), in relation with cancer.
