How does tramadol work?
Tramadol is a powerful pain medication that can be used for the treatment of mild to extreme pain that's not relieved by other pain medications. Tramadol is an opioid that is synthetic and works within the spine and brain (central nervous system) to lessen the degree of pain that you experience.
To ensure that tramadol is safe for you, ask your doctor if ever experienced:
kidney or liver disease;
a stomach disorder
mental illness or suicide attempts.
The Usual Dose for Adults of Pain:
For adults (17 years or more) 50-100 mg taken orally every between 4 and 6 hours, as required for pain. For patients not seeking the immediate start of analgesic effect, The initial dose is 25 mg once orally every day. Increase the dosage with increments of 25 mg every three days until reaching the dosage of 25 mg 4 times per day. Then increase the dose by 50 mg as tolerated every 3 days.
Maximum dose: 400 mg per day.
The usual adult dose for chronic pain:
18 years old or older (tramadol-naive) 100 mg taken orally, once a day
Individually titrate in increments of 100 mg every 5 days until reaching a dose that reduces the risk of adverse reactions
-Maximum Dose: 300 mg/day
For patients who are currently being treated with Immediate-Release (IR) Tramadol
Initial Dose: Determine the 24-hour IR requirement, and then begin the daily dose of ER reduced to the lower 100 mg increment. Take it every day, orally.
Conversion to other Opioids Stop all other opioids that are available 24/7 medications prior to starting therapy.
Initial dosage: 100 mg ER orally, once per day
Individually titrate the dose by increments of 100 mg every 5 days until you reach a dose that reduces the risk of adverse reactions
-Maximum Dose: 300 mg/day.
The dosage will be determined by the medical conditions you have and your response to treatment. To minimize the risk of experiencing side effects your physician may advise you to begin this medication with a lower dose and then gradually increase the dosage. Follow the instructions of your physician with care. The recommended dosage is 400 milligrams daily. If you are over 75 years old, the maximum dosage recommended is 300 milligrams daily. Do not increase the dosage or take the medication more often or for longer than the recommended. Make sure to stop taking the medication as you are directed to do so.
