Pericardial Mesothelioma - Causes, Symptoms, Diagnosis, Treatment, and Prognosis Information on Pericardial Mesothelioma

Pericardial Mesothelioma is the cancer of the mesothelium tissues of the liing of the heart. This document provides information on causes, symptoms, diagnosis, treatment, cures, remedies and prognosis for Pericardial Mesothelioma.

What is Pericardial Mesothelioma?

Pericardial mesothelioma results from cancerous growths in tissues surrounding the heart.

Pericardial Mesothelioma is also called mesothelioma of the heart lining or malignant pericardial mesothelioma.

Pericardial Mesothelium (lining of the heart) is made up of a special types of cells called mesothelia.

Pericardial Mesothelioma is a rare form of mesothelioma cancer of the cells that make up the protective lining (pericardial mesothelium) of the heart.

What Causes Pericardial Mesothelioma?
Eventhough Pericardial Mesothelioma has not been conclusively linked to asbestos exposure, it is believed that pericardial mesothelioma results from exposure to asbestos.

Pericardial Mesothelioma Symptoms:
Pericardial Mesothelioma Symptoms often include Chest pain, Chest Discomfort, Cough, Dyspnea (breathlessness), and Palpitations. Pericardial effusion (accumulation of fluid in the sac that encases the heart) is usually quite evident in radiographs.

Pericardial Mesothelioma Diagnosis:
Chest X-rays, CT scan, and MRI,
Biopsy of Pericardial Mesothelium Tissue
If abnormal Pericardial Mesothelium tissue is found or if there are any indicators of possible malignancy, a small tissue is retrived for further examination under a microscope.

Pericardial Mesothelioma Treatment:
Depending upon the severity (and cancer tumor size and it's spread) of this disease, and patient's age and overall health, different treatment path may be considered. If the cancer has already advanced significantly, the only option remaining may be to focus on improving the patient’s quality of life. Considering that many patients are diagnosed late, often in advanced stages of pericardial mesothelioma, surgery is often needed to help minimize the discomfort level. Depending on the stage of this cancer, the treatment options may include:

Radiotherapy
Chemotherapy
Surgery (if the cancer is caught in it's early stage)
Palliative surgery (fine needle aspiration)
It is a procedure to help drain the build up of fluid (pericardial effusion) in the pericardium . Fine needle aspiration procedure involves insertion of a needle into the chest cavity for draining the fluid accumulated in the pericardium. This low-risk, quick and easy procedure often provides significant symptomatic relief.

Pericardial Mesothelioma Prognosis, Patient Survival Rate:
Considering that Pericardial Mesothelioma is often diagnosed late, and the fact that there is no effective treatment for this disease, the prognosis for pericardial mesothelioma patients is often quite poor. Surgery for complete removal of advanced stage malignant pericardial mesothelioma cancer tumors is often not a viable option because it is very difficult to surgically remove such tumors.

Mesothelioma Causes - cause of mesothelioma

Mesothelioma is nearly always related to Asbestos exposure. Working with asbestos is the major risk factor for mesothelioma. Asbestos is an extremely dangerous material and low exposure levels can trigger Mesothelioma. A history of asbestos exposure at work is reported in about 70 percent to 80 percent of all cases. However, mesothelioma has been reported in some individuals without any known exposure to asbestos.

Asbestos is the name of a group of minerals that occur naturally as masses of strong, flexible fibers that can be separated into thin threads and woven. Asbestos has been widely used in many industrial products, including cement, brake linings, roof shingles, flooring products, textiles, and insulation. If tiny asbestos particles float in the air, especially during the manufacturing process, they may be inhaled or swallowed, and can cause serious health problems. In addition to mesothelioma, exposure to asbestos increases the risk of lung cancer, asbestosis (a noncancerous, chronic lung ailment), and other cancers, such as those of the larynx and kidney.

Smoking does not appear to increase the risk of mesothelioma. However, the combination of smoking and asbestos exposure significantly increases a person's risk of developing cancer of the air passageways in the lung.

Cause of Mesothelioma - Who is at increased risk for developing mesothelioma?
Asbestos has been mined and used commercially since the late 1800s. Its use greatly increased during World War II. Since the early 1940s, millions of American workers have been exposed to asbestos dust. Initially, the risks associated with asbestos exposure were not known. However, an increased risk of developing mesothelioma was later found among shipyard workers, people who work in asbestos mines and mills, producers of asbestos products, workers in the heating and construction industries, and other tradespeople. Today, the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) sets limits for acceptable levels of asbestos exposure in the workplace. People who work with asbestos wear personal protective equipment to lower their risk of exposure.

The risk of asbestos-related disease increases with heavier exposure to asbestos and longer exposure time. However, some individuals with only brief exposures have developed mesothelioma. On the other hand, not all workers who are heavily exposed develop asbestos-related diseases.

There is some evidence that family members and others living with asbestos workers have an increased risk of developing mesothelioma, and possibly other asbestos-related diseases. This risk may be the result of exposure to asbestos dust brought home on the clothing and hair of asbestos workers. To reduce the chance of exposing family members to asbestos fibers, asbestos workers are usually required to shower and change their clothing before leaving the workplace.

Mesothelioma, like any cancer, is a complicated disease. Cells in the mesothelium mutate from normal, non-dividing cells into cancerous ones that are dividing uncontrollably and without any order. For this to happen, several fundamental changes in th

Mesothelioma Cancer Centers

Currently, between 2,000 and 3,000 new cases of mesothelioma are diagnosed annually in the United States, compared with 215,000 new cases of traditional lung cancer. Although mesothelioma may represent a small percentage of cancer cases, a great deal of research is being conducted on it. As a result, many cancer centers are conducting clinical trials for new methods of treating the disease. Of course, some cancer centers are more focused on mesothelioma than others, and since where a patient seeks treatment can have a major impact on the success of the treatment, it is important to evaluate cancer centers carefully.
