The development of start-up firms that become profitable is very characteristic to CMU. Carnegie Mellon is one of the world’s best known universities that maps out its own route. More than 400 of the CMU university affiliated start-ups raised about seven billion dollars over the past ten years. James Gosling (CS 1983), the creator of Java programming language, did his studies in Carnegie Mellon University.
