The living goddess Kumari is a girl selected from the Newar community. She is particularly from the Shakya caste. She is believed to be the incarnation of the Hindu goddess Taleju. The selection process is rigorous, involving 32 physical attributes known as the "Battis Lakshanas." These attributes include everything from the color of her eyes to the shape of her teeth. Once chosen, she lives in the Kumari Ghar, a special house in Kathmandu's Durbar Square, where she is worshipped and cared for.
