Bone Marrow Transplant Treatment: A Lifesaving Journey
Bone marrow transplantation is a process that is undertaken when the bone marrow of a person is not functioning. Bone marrow is the material inside our bones where the new blood cells are manufactured. These blood cells are of utmost importance since they assist in providing oxygen & fighting infection, & furthermore stop bleeding. If a patient gets infected with a disease such as leukemia or a blood disorder, then his bone marrow is destroyed. In such cases, physicians recommend bone marrow transplant treatment to replace the defective bone marrow with healthy bone marrow. The healthy bone marrow can be the patient's or anyone's. If it is performed on the same individual, then it is an autologous transplant. Although treatment is promising, it also is not without risk, including infections, graft-versus-host disease, & side effects from potent medication. Recovery is long, & patients require close medical attention during & after transplantation.
