Secondary polycythemia (SP) occurs as a result of increase erythropoietin levels most commonly as a result of tissue hypoxia. Symptoms such as erythromelalgia, pruritis, and bleeding, which are frequently seen in polycythemia vera (PV), do not commonly occur in SP.
